Freak's Ultimate Off-Road Tire Test 2026 — We Let the Data Decide
There are a thousand "best tire" lists out there. Everyone has an opinion. So we did something different: we pulled the most credible 2026 off-road tire rankings we could find, scored them like golf — 1 point for first place, 2 for second, and so on — and let the numbers talk. Fewer points, more appearances = better result. Here are the six sources we used: GearJunkie, Road & Track, PickupTruckTalk (Tire Rack testing), SD Wheel, Love Thy Truck, and Tires-Easy.
How We Scored It
Simple: every ranked position earns that number of points. A tire ranked #1 in three tests scores 3 total. A tire ranked #5 in one test scores 5. Lowest combined score wins. Tires appearing in only one source were ranked lower than those validated across multiple independent tests — because one opinion isn't a pattern.

Quick Breakdown
🥇 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 — The most validated tire in this entire exercise. Topped both Road & Track and PickupTruckTalk's real-world Tire Rack test, appeared in 5 out of 6 sources, and never ranked below 7th in any list. The KO3 is the update to the legendary KO2 — improved mud evacuation, better sidewall durability, and 3-peak winter certification. ✅ Proven everywhere, aggressive but liveable ❌ Premium price, not the lightest option
🥈 Toyo Open Country AT III — Three independent sources, consistently strong. SD Wheel ranked it #2, Road & Track #4, GearJunkie #5. Widely praised for wet grip and tread life. ✅ Excellent wet traction, long-lasting ❌ Can get noisy at speed
🥉 Nitto Ridge Grappler — Low raw score, solid multi-source presence. Topped SD Wheel's popularity chart and ranked 4th in PickupTruckTalk's Tire Rack test as the "rugged AT" pick. Hybrid AT/MT means more off-road bite than a standard AT without going full mud-terrain. ✅ Great sidewall, surprisingly quiet ❌ Not best in class on any single metric
4. Falken Wildpeak AT4W — The newer, tougher sibling of the legendary AT3W. Three sources, strong off-road credibility, and the Heat Diffuser technology makes it a favourite for anyone who tows. ✅ Towing-friendly, winter-rated, tough sidewall ❌ Fewer size options than AT3W
5. Falken Wildpeak AT3W — The old faithful. Four appearances across six sources. It keeps showing up everywhere despite being the older model. ✅ Proven, widely available, great value ❌ AT4W outperforms it in serious off-road
6. Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT — Three appearances, loyal fanbase. Asymmetric tread, 50k mile warranty, comparatively quiet for its aggression. ✅ Looks great, solid warranty ❌ Pricier than most rivals
7. BFG Mud-Terrain KM3 — A special case: it scored low because it only appeared in mud-terrain categories, not general AT tests. If you're doing serious mud work, this is the one. ✅ Exceptional in deep mud ❌ Wrong tool for daily driving
8. Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT — GearJunkie's #1 overall pick, but only appeared in one source. Brilliant tyre — just needs more cross-validation to rank higher here.
Freak's Take
The data speaks clearly: the BFGoodrich KO3 is the most universally respected off-road tyre of 2026. Five sources, never ranked below 7th, topped by two out of six tests on the list. If we were building a rig today, that's what goes on it. That said — the Falken AT3W deserves a special mention. It keeps appearing everywhere, costs significantly less, and has been earning trust for years. Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason.
